Seldom has a supposed leader given a more lackluster, deflated, less than impressive and all around pathetic endorsement to something he supposedly holds as an ideal than Barack Obama did this past week in timidly declaring he “personally” supports same sex marriage. Barely skipping a beat he went into full CYA (cover your ass) mode by adding the caveat that he feels legalizing same sex marriage should nonetheless be left to the individual states. If ever there was a “WTF” moment in politics there you have it! Suddenly the champion of the Leftist ideal of centralized big government is a champion for States Rights? President Obama’s position on the legalization of same sex marriage is suddenly indistinguishable from Rick Perry’s?
There are those who will say that as I myself am not homosexual I cannot understand nor appreciate the excitement and sheer joy the President’s words evoked from the homosexual community, but what I am is not blind and what I can understand and appreciate is that in terms of substance there is nothing to be excited about for anyone. To be excited over the President’s pronouncement is akin to being excited over someone giving you a million dollar check drawn on an account with no funds. Is the homosexual community's vote so cheaply bought? Clearly the President and the Democratic Party think so. These masterful manipulators of identity politics have shown time and again that they think only in terms of the group, never the individual and certainly no one as an American but only as a special interest. To people like the President, David Axelrod and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz if you are homosexual there is no other issue that concerns you other than same sex marriage, but even were the political calculation true the cynical and vacuous pandering we saw this week gains the proponents of same sex marriage nothing! The President’s pronouncement of being “personally” in favor of same sex marriage is much like being “personally” in favor of keeping your neighbor's house from burning down but you won't be the one to call 911 nor even lend your hose to help put out the fire.
Mr. President, what kind of "support" is it to be in favor of something that you will leave for others to allow or disallow? If you believe that marriage, regardless of sexual orientation, is a basic Right and to prevent people from marrying who they choose because they are of the same sex is wrong then it is wrong EVERYWHERE and standing idly by doing nothing puts you in the wrong as well. Where is your conviction, Mr. President? Would you have taken the same stance on laws which once banned interracial marriage? Leave it to the States? Would you have taken the same stance in 1860 on slavery and said "leave it to the States"? And this is the man they want to portray as the modern day Lincoln? How would history remember Lincoln today had he not written the Emancipation Proclamation but rather the Emancipation Suggestion?
I know from personal observation that there are actually many even among the Left who are less than impressed by this cynical political ploy, but even among those there are too many willing to forgive and jump on the Obama bandwagon because, as someone wrote in response to me on facebook, “Some hope is better than no hope which is what you get from the other Party”. No ma’am, I heartily disagree. No hope is your dollar today worth a penny tomorrow. No hope is an ever decreasing workforce in the face of an ever increasing entitlement state. No hope is stoking the flames of class and racial warfare. No hope is a gutted military. No hope is an exponential increase of those on food stamps. No hope is changing the First Amendment of theConstitution to regulate speech. No hope is being beholding to our greatest enemies. No hope is the supremacy of the State over the God given rights of the individual. That is what the Democrat Party has to offer. Stalin was a "Progressive" too.
