Cupcakes, Cookies and Liberal Hypocrisy

Want to hear a riddle?  When does preferential treatment for minorities and women, a hallmark of modern American Liberalism, become offensive to those very same Liberals to the point of condemnation?  When the preferential treatment occurs at a bake sale put on by the Berkley College Republicans.

On Tuesday, September 27th these college Republicans exercised their right of assembly and speech by holding their own Affirmative Action Bake Sale entitled “Increase Diversity Bake Sale”.  The concept of this particular type of protest using delicious treats is quite simple: a multi-tiered pricing system for the sale of baked goods is employed to demonstrate the inherently discriminatory, immoral and frankly unconstitutional nature of using race and or gender as criteria in considering a potential student’s application for admission to the University of California (as proposed by SB 185).  Specifically the price list was:

And then campus Democrats, assorted Liberals, Progressives, silver spoon Socialists, Mercedes driving Marxists, Che Guevarra t-shirt wearers and other assorted Leftists rabble rousers fell all over themselves to see who could be the biggest hypocrite.  Consider the student government of UC Berkeley: the Associated Students of the University of California.

Really, Miss Loomba, can you not see both the contradiction and inherent hypocrisy in denouncing a bake sale which gives preferential treatment based on race and or gender while mobilizing the masses to support a new state law which would institutionalize the exact same kind of discrimination?

So horrified, so distraught, so overwhelmed with civic duty to right this impending wrong the student government held an emergency senate meeting Sunday to discuss the issue which resulted in the passing a resolution which “condemns the use of discrimination whether it is in satire or in seriousness by any student group.”  The ASUC has come out in full support of SB 185 to the point that they hosted a phone bank, yards from the now infamous bake sale, to flood the governor’s office with calls urging him to sign this regressive legislation.  Clearly the message the ASUC wishes to convey is that discrimination in satire by a student group is strictly verboten but potential discrimination by the admissions board of UC Berkeley to increase “diversity” is obviously peachy keen!

Since most of us could not attend the bake sale and yet are probably hungering from the thought of it here is some final food for thought: Considering that of the 9,300 students admitted for the Fall semester at UC Berkeley 4,096 were asian while black and latinos numbered 332 and 1,530 respectively what would Miss Loomba’s tune be had SB 185 been in affect when she applied and her spot been given to someone else to bump up those lagging numbers and increase diversity?  Cover that in all the frosting you want, but I dare say it would have left a bitter taste in her mouth.
